Week 3

A little late, but better late than never.

This week started out with a field trip to Klausmeyer Dairy Farm. We got there a bit early, it was foggy that morning and we had never been to this farm so we left with plenty of time in case we got lost or other problems occured. They had a play ground area that the kids were allowed to play on the play ground while we waited for the preschool group that we were scheduled to do our tour with.

Once the preschool arrived our tour started off with a milking demonstration. Cookie was the cow that was milked. While she was being milked we were told some different facts about cows.

After cookie was finished milking they poured some of the milk in a bottle so we could all go and feed her calf.

After everyone fed the calf we moved on to where the chics, bunnies, and ducklings were and everyone had a chance to hold them.

After we got to hold the baby animals, we went out and everyone got to throw some feed to the cows. We then all headed out to watch the pig races. This was  really fun. We learned that pigs are the 4th smartest animals in the world. The pigs that we watched race had only done this a couple of times and they new exactly what to do to get their reward.

The pig races were exciting and the kids all enjoyed cheering them on to victory. After the races we all hopped on the wagon to head out to the pumpkin patch where everyone got to pick out a pumpkin to take home.

The rest of the field trip was a hay maze, Libby and Dimera paired up, Teyla and Aunt Michelle, paired up and Landon and I paired up and then we had a race to see who could make it out first. Teyla and Michelle made it out first but they didn't make it out of the real exit, Landon and I made it out of the real exit next and since we made it out of the real exit first we declared ourselves the true winners. At this point the preschoolers packed up and went back to school, but there was more for us to do. We watched a video that talked about the food pyramid and the importance of milk. After the video we headed out and got to have a tour of the milking barn, where the kids were able to put their finger in the milking machine to see how it feels on the cows teats. They also learned that when the machine is on the cow teats that it is like having a massage for them because it takes all the pressure away.

We had a really great time on this field trip and learned a lot.

The rest of the week was back to the books.

Landon studied about farms, that is why we went on the field trip to begin with. He made three books. The first book was Farm animal babies. He wrote the name of the farm animal baby and then drew a picture of that animal. He did another book where he named an animal colored the picture of that animal and then wrote the sound the animal made. The last book he did was a math book where he counted the different farm animals and put them in order from 1 to 10. He also worked on his fine motor skills by cutting and pasting out shapes to finish pictures of a barn, and a cow. He played a matching game where he matched the mommy animals to the baby animals, it was a memory type game.

Teyla had book work. In math she worked on her adding doubles and perfected them. We took a little longer than I had expected working on them, because I wanted to be sure she got them before we moved on. In English she worked on learning what an Exclamation sentence was, what a question sentence was and then she had to know the difference from a telling sentence, a command sentence, an exclamation sentence and a question sentence. We took a break from science this week. In heritage studies we are talking about communities new and old. So we talked about our community today and how it was in the old days. We went on to discuss about the Libraries of today and of the past. Teyla also started her Mythology class with Aunt Michelle this week.

Liberty also had a lot of book work. In math she is working on  Decimal tenths, Decimal hundredths and is reviewing rounding to 100 thousands. In English Libby is working on simple subjects, simple predicates, diagramming subjects and predicates, and compound subjects and predicates. Libby had her first computer lesson this week. I think she did a really good job on her assignment.

All in all  we had a good week
